NGC
1999 is a reflection nebula that lies approximately 1500 light years
away in the constellation of Orion. It shines by the light of the
variable star V380 Orionis. The small, t-shaped obstruction at the
center of nebula was originally believed to be a dark nebula. However,
later observations revealed that the darkness is actually open space
that may have been cleared by the jets of young stars in the region.
